Current Status

The President signed the National Bison Legacy Act on May 9, 2016 making the North American bison the official National Mammal of the United States

Current management of buffalo herds in Yellowstone National Park by Federal authorities does not allow natural seasonal migration to public lands in bordering states of Montana, Wyoming & Idaho (greater Yellowstone ecosystem). Excess animals are captured and sent to slaughter each year. There are also other public lands in addition to Native American Indian Reservations in Montana that would be appropriate for buffalo, however severe restrictions by the state of Montana do not allow this to happen.
